Design of Snake Robots

Posted January 31, 2011 by Chris

Robotic snakes have come into light more recently as a unique type of robot that can move into tight spaces and go where other wheeled robots cannot. This project goes through the design of a basic snake robot that moves through locomotion of motors.

I-Swarm Micro Robots Realized

Posted January 30, 2011 by Chris

This project takes a new look at I-swarm robots with miniature locomotion bots. An impressive full system integration is built and shown in some action videos. Custom asics allow for each tiny bot to communicate with the others around and perform actions synchronously.

WFR – a Dead Reckoning Robot

Posted January 29, 2011 by Chris

Any attempt at dead-reckoning in autonomous vehicles is at present extremely difficult. Without expensive sensors the accumulated error grows exponentially with time. The WFR robot takes a shot at trying out some dead-reckoning navigation techniques for location tracking.

Feral Robotic Dogs

Posted January 28, 2011 by Chris

Vestal designers purchased cheap robotic toy dogs, reverse engineered their CPU’s, and reprogrammed them to “hunt” toxic waste. Building upon this experience, later models (pictured above) were built from scratch to meet the all-terrain needs of the urban environment.

Build A Digital Tachometer/RPM Counter

Posted January 27, 2011 by Chris

The tachometer is not a new invention, but being able to build a digital tachometer in less than an hour by yourself shows you how far technology has come. This tutorial guides you through the process of building your own PIC based rpm counter!

Stonehenge – A Robotic Digital Clock

Posted January 26, 2011 by Chris

This robotic clock seems to combine old school thought with cutting edge robotics technology. Every minute the robot updates the clock by moving one number away and replacing it with the actual time. The write-up doesn’t have many details on exact specifications, but the basic theory is pretty obvious.

BricoClock

Posted January 25, 2011 by Chris

Here’s a new project from bricogeek, the arduino powered BricoClock. The project write-up is in spanish, but the pictures and schematics make it clear how to build one yourself. LED power!

Robot Turns Desk Into Touch Table

Posted January 24, 2011 by Chris

This robot called “LuminAR” shines a display on your desk and you can select it with your finger. This is registered the robot provides more options. It is seemingly like a having a sixth sense, but really its just advanced robotics at work to integrate into human lives.

Rise v3: Pole-Climbing Robot

Posted January 23, 2011 by Chris

This robot built by boston dynamics was built with climbing telephone polls in mind. It does so in a similar way that humans currently climb them with spiked feet. Check out the pics and action vid. Unfortunately this robot isn’t open source.

DIY Wireless Race Timing System

Posted January 22, 2011 by Chris

This guy uses a cascade of hacking in order to build a wireless timing system for racing. He uses some hacked wireless radios to trigger a stop watch to start and stop. I think it could have been built in an easier way, but a neat solution to this problem.
