If you have an old DE1 board from Altera, this article will interest you. It clones the Sega Genesis console and allows you to play a few of the old school games that the Genesis had. Project files are stored in google’s code repository with a tiny bit of documentation (I really wish there was more).

Just as popular science says “now this is the droid we’re looking for!” Someone with far too much time went ahead and stuck 8 console gaming systems inside of an R2D2 model with a projection display. I wish there were more details on the electronic innards but the pictures will have to suffice my curiosity.

Here’s a simple little game that uses the ATtiny microcontroller made by Atmel. A black and white LCD is used as output, a single button for input which creates the thrill of a throw-back to an old Apple-IIe game. Hardware and software details of how to make your own are in the article.

This tiny gaming system duplicates the old game of Simon using a small PIC micro and a tiny platform just big enough to fit into your hands. The article includes the PCB layout and artwork, along with hardware schematics and software. For a DIY game system, this is a great article to follow and duplicate.

Here’s a throwback to 2000, using a throw back from 1972, Pong! The project was built for a class at Cornell and the article explains their design process and features the hardware outline and source code for the Atmel microcontroller.

The documentation of this home made ARM based game console is pretty wicked. The article describes in a fast-paced mode his method of creating his own game console. There are pictures, descriptions, schematics and videos of the project. So if you’ve ever wanted to build your very own game console system, check out this article!

It’s hard to really understand what problem this project solves, but the cool factor is definitely off the charts. This article shows you how to build up a display of Fire that grooves along with your guitar hero key presses. All the details are there…make your own if you dare.

Arkanoid is a classic from the golden days of arcade games and now you can make it yourself. Altera’s DE-1 board is used with some VGA output and buttons for input to create a simple yet awesome looking arcade game. The article is in italian, but the action video shows it all.

If you’re not familiar with Altera’s DE2 or DE3 development boards, take a minute and google search them, they’re powerful. Today’s project uses a DE2 to make a simple lemmings-like falling sand game. Output is displayed on an LCD and you input using a standard PS/2 keyboard. A complex, yet fun project.

Tetris is one of the oldest and best games right up there with Pong. It has been recreated countless times, and here is an awesome rehash using a PIC microcontroller and some LED arrays. The project write-up has all the hardware and software details needed to build your own.
