The idea of the Segway drove many people to try and build their own version. This segway is open source so all the code is there waiting for you. The project write-up lists & details out the parts used with lots of pictures. Be sure to watch the video!

This is an awesome project made by some students at Georgia Tech. It’s a robot/machine that takes midi input and translates it over so that it can be played on guitar. No video samples, but there are some audio downloads of the robot playing that are very impressive.

Now for a look at some professional research, here is the robotic waterstrider. It uses properties of water tension to ‘stand on the water’ and even walk/run on it. There are quite a few professional papers included that have been written on this topic. Pretty cool stuff I’d say.

Plotbot is a single piece of paper plotter that can be erased and printed with something new on the fly. Granted it’s just a mod made from a child’s toy, but this application is something we need in offices because of all the paper-waste going on. Be sure to check out the video of it in action.

We’ve seen stepper motor control tutorials before. However today’s project write-up goes into much greater detail. It is an in-depth thesis on the topic of Steppers. There are also a plethora of links to different manufacturers and resources, all for stepper motors.

Hexapods have recently grown far more popular in both autonomous & r/c worlds. This short, but informative write-up details the process of making a hexapod with standard hobby servos. There are many resourceful links within it as well.

The yellow drum machine is a neat little robot that navigates & plays music. It drums using little ‘drum sticks’ attached to its body with actuators. The write-up details the entire project and there are alot of cool videos of the robot in action!

This is probably the most impressive use of Lego’s Mindstorms robotics kit. The robot does exactly what you’re thinking, solves the rubik’s cube. Build instructions, software & an awesome video are all available in the write-up.

The robot was named Fuzzy, after the type of intelligence given to it-Fuzzy Logic. It uses omni directional wheels and is controlled by a PIC. The fuzzy logic AI is used to give the robot a way to display emotions through its movement.

This little robot is quite innovative in design. Each of the 4 wheels is independently steered, along with some sensors to guide it. Many videos, the CAD layout & prototype designs are all in the write-up.
