“Flyback transformers are found in monitors, TVs or anything with a CRT, and are sometimes known as Line OutPut Transformers, or just LOPT. They are used for generating high voltage for the CRT, which is needed to create an electric field, which in turn accelerates electrons towards the screen, which finally excite phosphors and create the image you see.”

Here’s a CNC panel cutter that uses the NXP mbed platform to give you control to move a drill on x, y and z axis. The platform allows for manual or automatic scripted control of the drill and display output on two 16×2 LCDs. The project documentation is comprehensive as this is a design entry for an NXP contest.

Call them what you will: Coil guns, Rail guns or whatever, but these things are pure awesome. This article gives insight on how to build a coil gun using some electronics and a disposable camera. Details are a little light (extra info: the stunning camera) but the theory is sound. Be safe with this thing!

I’m not really a believer that burning flesh via shock therapy is a valid wart removal procedure, however it has been around for ages. This article explains how it is suppose to work and how you can easily build your own on-the-cheap. A good read if nothing else. Don’t kill yourself with this thing please!

It’s hard to really understand what problem this project solves, but the cool factor is definitely off the charts. This article shows you how to build up a display of Fire that grooves along with your guitar hero key presses. All the details are there…make your own if you dare.

This article details out the process for making a laser spirograph using a PIC micro. Laser Spirographs require precise control and can make some pretty wicked images, but they are pretty complex to build. The 8-part article gives you all the hardware schematics, software and information needed to build your own.

An electrified jacob’s ladder is a cool thing to see in action. Its high voltage nature, like the tesla coil, allows you to see raw electricity at kilo-volts. This article explains and shows you how to make a small scale jacob’s ladder, with some rather unique parts.

This robot has a flamethrower attached so that it can draw any vector graphics on a lawn by torching the grass in its way. Build details are a bit scarce, but the pictures speak for themselves of what this thing can do.

Today’s PyroElectro Project: The Tupperware Turret is a highly modified airsoft pistol put onto a pan and tilt platform with a turret cover. It rotates, tilts up and down and has precise fire control. Control is done wirelessly with a generic TV remote control.
