Get Quartus II
The software IDE suite that altera providers for development is called 'Quartus II'. A similar suite is called Max II that you have also heard of, but its an older IDE. If you have the DE2 Kit, just pull out the dvd provided (for windows if you use windows or the linux dvd if you use linux) and load it into your dvd drive.
If you don't have the dvd's don't worry! You can download quartus II off of altera's website: altera.com. Here's a picture to help you out:
Just click that button and then click the big yellow download button and that'll start the download. Quartus II is a pretty big program, so it may take a while.
For the rest of this tutorial I'm going to assume that you're using the DE2 kit dvd's so some of the screen pictures may differ from yours if you're downloading the software from altera's website.
Now that we have the proper board support package for the eBOX-II we can go ahead and make a sample platform for it. Once the DVD is in your drive, this will popup:
Go ahead and click 'Install Free Package' and let's get it started.
