L298 Stepper Motor Control: Hardware

           After understanding the schematic you just saw, go ahead and assemble it on a small breadboard. Here is an example of what it should look like after you get it all wired up:



LMD18245 vs. L298
           If you read the previous stepper motor control tutorial on pyroelectro you would know that a different motor controller the LMD18245 was used. In order to control a stepper motor with that device, 2 of them were necessary and many more I/O lines were used from the PIC. So it's fairly obvious that the L298 offers a better design in terms of using fewer I/O lines and an overall smaller circuit for stepper control.
