You can use a digital multimeter's continuity test to make sure all the connections were made to your device, or you can just use it and see if it works. I suggest doing both. Below is a quick action video of my ethernet port being used. You can't really tell that it's doing anything but the Tx and Rx LEDs are blinking like mad.
The breakout board works and it makes it so that I have easy access to all the pins on the ethernet port, where before they were clumped together and hard to test. Better yet now I can put the ethernet port easily on a breadboard to connect to my prototyped designs!
