This project was done almost entirely with software and the end product is a custom hardware module. This should give you an idea of how advanced technology has come when we can design custom hardware on-the-fly.

The Masochist's Video Card is both much larger and more power hungry than the small DE0 Nano Development board, but as you'll see in the video below, despite their differences they're able to perform the same task.
Hopefully your final thoughts after seeing the two projects go head-to-head is that the DE0, and for the most part all FPGA's, offer designers a superior method for building custom digital hardware. Naturally there are limitations, but for our purposes here, I would rather spend 30 minutes doing VHDL, than 10 hours wire-wrapping!
