The many steps from beginning to finish were documented in this article in a way that anyone can follow along with. Additionally the video in the Data & Observations section gave proof as well as an additional learners aid for the 'cross-development' process for development with the Arduino platform.

After you have the Arduino platform and development enviornment properly setup, there are no more limits but your imagination. You can begin to explore the more advanced functionality that the Arduino platform offers like with the build in hardware like analog to digital converters and timers. Interrupts will also be an important topic to understand as you progress further and further.
