Both PIC microcontrollers have the firmware loaded and the Xbee modules are wired up to the PIC making a Xbee wireless interface transmitter and receiver. The video below demonstrates how well the system works.
The range of the system is limited to something around 100 meters but with an antenna or a more powerful xbee module you can get further. I'll leave that up to you guys to experiment with. But as an example system you see how well these modestly priced (around $30) Xbee modules work. You do need two of them, but the reliability is worth the cost and elimantes the headache seen when dealing with cheaper rf modules.
