DC Motor Control: The DC Motor

DC Motor Theory
The DC motor was invented quite a long time ago. It uses the principles of magnetism to turn. The standard dc motor has two magnets surrounding a large coil of wire. When electric current flows through the wire, it creates a magnetic field that fights against the surrounding magnets. Thus the motor turns.

The best way to learn how something works is to take it apart. Above is a cut away picture of the insides of a simple radio shack style 1.5v dc motor. I've gone ahead and labeled some parts in the above picture as well.

DC Motor in Action
Presumably everyone and anyone reading this article has seen some form of motor or engine at work so perhaps this video is futile. However, for what it's worth here is what happens when you hook up a battery to a dc motor.
