Creating VGA With VHDL: Introduction

Project Info
Author: Chris
Difficulty: Medium-Difficult
Time Invested: 5 Hours

Prerequisites:
You will need a UP1 or UP2
development board.

Continuing with another VHDL tutorial, we'll now use the UP2 board to generate the precise timing that VGA signals demand. Doing this will allow us to output to any monitor that accepts VGA input.
For this tutorial you will need the UP2 or equivalent (dev board with VGA port & 25.175 MHz clock). The Altera UP2 board is inexpensive at about $99 and it is a great platform for people who are just beginning. Keep that in mind if you do go to purchase it.

Purpose & Overview of this project
The goal of this tutorial is to further our understanding of VHDL syntax and code even more using the UP-2 platform. VHDL will allow us to create our own method for VGA signal generation. Depending on how the problem is approached the code can very nice and clean or it can turn out sloppy and unreliable. We'll try for the first one!
