Halloween - Need a way to move an animated mouth to sound

Postby rbreak7 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 3:17 pm

I am a beginner to alot of this. I am looking for an easy and cheap way to make an animated skull mouth move to inputted audio. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey rbreak7,

Well the easiest of easy would be to download MouthOff if you have an iPhone:

although I don't know how I would feel about leaving an iphone inside of a pumpking outside for a night.

Were you looking at trying to build some animated robot lips, or something along those lines?

Thanks for the app but I want to build an animated mouth fixture for a plastic skeleton head.

rbreak7,

To build a physical fixture, you would use a servo motor (or a motor type of your choice) to move the jaw back and forth. A microcontroller could control the jaw movement.

A servo motor is a type of motor that moves to and stays at a location you specify. The hobby servo in the tutorial below has a few spots for screws that you could mount the skeleton jaw too.

Servo Motor Control Tutorial: http://www.pyroelectro.com/tutorials/servo_motor/index.html

To make the jaw move with the audio, you would have two choices, either make it dynamically move with the audio [difficult] or input a bunch of known movements that the skeleton jaw would repeat [easier-but time consuming].

Maybe this gives you a intro to what you'd need. Hope it helps.

Thank you. I will go thru the tutorial. I want to try to do it dynamically.

request for simple schematic

I like to do the same, where is sound (voice, song etc) input is converted to a movement of the jar (so the mentioned dynamic option).
Are any simple cirquits available?

Hi Arthur,

I'm not aware of any simple circuits as this is a pretty complex thing to do dynamically.

It would be easier and quicker in the long run to consider pre-programmed movements.
