Altera EPM240 Board

Postby Bingo600 » Sun Jul 13, 2014 8:01 am

As i thought the "kit" was to expensive in shippping , and that i had the "blaster" and components already.

I decided to get this model/board , from Hobby Components UK as the course was almost starting and i couldn't wait for "China"
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LC-MAXII-Altera ... 1057457542

It was a "mixed pleasure" to deal with them.
I had to register on their site , and expose my e-mail (spam) , just to be able to download the promised doc.
I hate that "trick".

That's why i gave them a "neutral" on the ebay feedback , w. a comment "board was ok , but i had to register on website to get the doc." , i didn't give them bad or anything.
The day after they wrote they have banned me from their store , as long as this feedback "stands" :?

So i'd advice to avoid buying from them , as you're only allowed to give posisive feedback.

The board has the 3v3 regulator onboard (I feed it 5v , via the regulator), and a LED , and a 50Mhz Osc.
The button is switching the 5v input for the regulator on/off , so it's not connected to the cpld..

If you have the "Blaster" i'd get this one.

This one allthough cheaper , has blurred the LC Studio logo , and writes something about the pcb color not being the same.
Smells fishy , i would avoid that seller (actually many stores has the same text & pict.)

There's a small design example for the board here

New post due to max 5 url's limit in one post.

You can get a board and a blaster from same seller here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Altera-MAX-II-E ... 0704544415
http://www.ebay.com/itm/altera-Mini-Usb ... 0943750380

I would due to customs rules in DK (below US12.50$ value is VAT/customs free in DK) have chosen the EPM240 from one seller and the Blaster from the other. Then none was above 12.50$ , and i would have no probs with VAT & Customs.

But if i had neither board nor "Blaster" i'd get this one. (usb-blaster included).
But it would exceed the stupid US $12.5 , customs limit here in DK.
And i'd have to pay 25% VAT to get it into DK , that's ok.
But the DK-Mail is allowed to charge a $25 VAT handling fee , for handling the 25% VAT payment. That is not ok :(

But the board seems to have everything Chris would use in this course.
I found the doc here

This one actually looks super cool for learning, but has the old Parallel byteblaster included (requires a parport) .... WHY ??
I'd throw it away immediately , and order a usb-blaster to go with this board.
I'd add the $2 extra , to get the EPM570T100C5N cpld upgrade (says so on the page).

Ohh... And Chris could have made some mean designs to/for us if we all had an EPM240 :)

Some pretty useful links :D . We contract for the course kits with Gadgetory.com so that anyone who wants to spend the money knows exactly where to go, the cost is relatively cheap if you're just wanting to test the waters, but if you know you want to go all-in, by all means get a real board with more features!

Aliexpress is cheap, but its just always a gamble whether or not you'll get what you think it is or something that even works. But $5-10 arduino boards and what not is a hard thing to pass up  .
I'd say around 66-75% of my transactions on ali-express worked out. The trick is to never get too much from one place, which is especially easy since they all offer free shipping.

Haha, the parallel port version of CPLD/FPGA programmers is dirt cheap. That's why it'll be included for 'free' or whatever.

I wrote an article on how to make one: http://www.pyroelectro.com/tutorials/byteblastermv/

When I was teaching CPLD/FPGA stuff at university, I let my students construct a ByteBlasterMV for extra credit. The parts for it cost all of around USD $2-3.
