Variable can work.

The parts list has the gripper linked to the distributor's website:

http://www.pyroelectro.com/parts/little_gripper/

The jaws open to 1.3" and the wrist rotates approximately 180 degrees. It needs only a screw driver for assembly. Use any of our Microcontrollers to operate the servos.

There is your diameter limit if you choose to use variable.

HS-5685 gives you more torque and are better for the base/lower servo locations. HS-5485 is a little cheaper and less torque, better for the gripper/higher up servos.
