Postby duncan » Tue Jun 26, 2012 6:46 pm

Does any one know how to interface a flash to fpga then boot from flash?

Hi,

Typically FPGA rom/bit files are stored in an on-board flash memory device (eeprom) that uses a SPI type interface. The FPGA has a built-in routine to access and load the configuation from the ROM on start-up. Xilinx and Altera make their own JTAG compatible EEPROM flash memories that are meant for interfacing and programming FPGA's.

Most FPGAs also have 3rd-party EEPROM capabilities for microchip or atmel SPI flash memory devices (depends on the FPGA, the datasheets usually spell out all the specifics).

If you're perhaps thinking about using a USB flash drive (since you made a post about USB stuff in this forum as well maybe?) for programming the FPGA, that won't work easily. You would need an extra USB compatible controller to understand the data through-put via USB and pass configuration bits on to the FPGA.
